Market Size for Primary Cells and Batteries in Eastern Asia
The East Asian primary cell and battery market expanded significantly to $X in 2022, with an increase of 6.5% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -0.1% against 2018 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Production of Primary Cells and Batteries in Eastern Asia
In value terms, primary cell and battery production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Asia
In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of primary cells and batteries, when their volume decreased by -7.8% to X units. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 231% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, primary cell and battery exports dropped to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 8% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
China prevails in exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X units), constituting a 6% share of total exports. Japan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to primary cell and battery exports from China stood at +1.0%. At the same time, Japan (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +3.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+5.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Hong Kong SAR (-5.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest primary cell and battery supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled +2.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hong Kong SAR (-2.7% per year) and Japan (+0.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 2.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 163% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Primary Cells and Batteries
Imports in Eastern Asia
In 2022, approx. X units of primary cells and batteries were imported in Eastern Asia; dropping by -9.4% on 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 6.3% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, primary cell and battery imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 9.5%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Hong Kong SAR (X units), Japan (X units) and China (X units) represented roughly 87% of total imports in 2022. South Korea (X units) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X units). All these countries together held near 12% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +9.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest primary cell and battery importing markets in Eastern Asia were Hong Kong SAR ($X), China ($X) and Japan ($X), together comprising 80% of total imports. South Korea and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.
South Korea, with a CAGR of +7.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, surging by 3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 8.7%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per unit), while Japan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
