In 2022, overseas shipments of printing ink increased by 2.9% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, recorded a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, printing ink exports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from Japan (X tons), China (X tons) and South Korea (X tons), together recording 85% of total export. It was distantly followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), comprising an 11% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +1.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Japan ($X) remains the largest printing ink supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Japan was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+4.0% per year) and South Korea (-2.7% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. Imports in Eastern Asia
In 2022, the amount of printing ink imported in Eastern Asia reduced to X tons, which is down by -14.5% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 6.4% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, printing ink imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of printing ink, namely China, Taiwan (Chinese) and Hong Kong SAR, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Japan (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by South Korea (9.1%).
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Korea (with a CAGR of -2.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported printing ink in Eastern Asia, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled -2.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hong Kong SAR (-6.0% per year) and Japan (+1.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, printing ink import price increased by +66.7% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
