Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +69.4% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, imports of protein concentrates and flavoured or coloured sugar syrups soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Korea was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 62% of total imports. Japan (X tons) held a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (10%) and China (6.2%). Hong Kong SAR (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

At the same time, China (+23.6%) and Japan (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +23.6% from 2012-2021. Taiwan (Chinese) experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, the largest protein concentrate and flavoured or coloured sugar syrup importing markets in Eastern Asia were South Korea ($X), Japan ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), together accounting for 80% of total imports. China and Hong Kong SAR lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.
China, with a CAGR of +28.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 12%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
