China (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -1.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest pyrethrum and peppermint supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 4.4% share of total exports.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of pyrethrum and peppermint, when their volume decreased by -0.9% to X tons. Overall, imports showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. In value terms, Japan ($X), South Korea ($X) and China ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 67% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) and Hong Kong SAR lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +5.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 21%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
