Exports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of quinoa increased by 9.1% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 3,433% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, quinoa exports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 259%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Hong Kong SAR (X tons) was the major exporter of quinoa, committing 78% of total exports. China (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons). All these countries together held near 22% share of total exports.

From 2014 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to quinoa exports from Hong Kong SAR stood at +53.9%. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+121.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Taiwan (Chinese) emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +121.8% from 2014-2021. By contrast, China (-25.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+16 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+5.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -21.4% from 2014 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the largest quinoa supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

In Hong Kong SAR, quinoa exports increased at an average annual rate of +47.3% over the period from 2014-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (-30.9% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-27.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -11.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a dramatic descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 77%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (-4.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of quinoa imported in Eastern Asia surged to X tons, jumping by 32% against the year before. Overall, imports saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 129%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, quinoa imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 252%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

China represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 64% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Japan (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 32% share of total imports. South Korea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

At the same time, South Korea (+129.5%), Hong Kong SAR (+80.5%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+35.9%) and Japan (+13.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. China (+64 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (+13 p.p.), Hong Kong SAR (+7.4 p.p.) and South Korea (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Japan saw its share reduced by -88.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported quinoa in Eastern Asia, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 13% share.

In China, quinoa imports expanded at an average annual rate of +162.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+19.9% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+77.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -11.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton.
