Rare Earth Metal Market Size in Eastern Asia

After three years of growth, the East Asian rare earth metal market decreased by -3.1% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, rare earth metal exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced descent. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The biggest shipments were from China (X tons), together recording 98% of total export.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rare earth metals exports, with a CAGR of +14.2% from 2012 to 2021. China (+28 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) also remains the largest rare earth metal supplier in Eastern Asia.

In China, rare earth metal exports declined by an average annual rate of -2.0% over the period from 2012-2021.

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, faced a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 39%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for China.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of rare earth metals, when their volume increased by 27% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Japan dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 96% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - China (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.8% share of total imports.

Imports into Japan decreased at an average annual rate of -3.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, China (+10.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +10.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Korea (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Japan (+2 p.p.) and China (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rare earth metals in Eastern Asia, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Japan stood at -2.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+33.3% per year) and South Korea (-1.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+20.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
