Market Size for Raspberries, Blackberries, Blueberries, and Cranberries in Eastern Asia

For the fifth year in a row, the East Asian market for raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 8% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +73.8% against 2012 indices. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Production of Raspberries, Blackberries, Blueberries, and Cranberries in Eastern Asia

In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 85% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

China (X tons) remains the largest raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry producing country in Eastern Asia, comprising approx. 100% of total volume.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in China totaled +1.1%.

The average raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry yield was estimated at X tons per ha in 2022, flattening at the year before. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 0.9% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry harvested area reached X ha in 2022, flattening at 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 5.5%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Asia

In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries, when their volume decreased by -11.5% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 302%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 222%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

The shipments of the one major exporters of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries, namely Hong Kong SAR, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Hong Kong SAR was also the fastest-growing in terms of the raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries exports, with a CAGR of +52.1% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) also remains the largest raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry supplier in Eastern Asia.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Hong Kong SAR totaled +55.8%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 51% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) was the largest importer of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries, mixing up 57% of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by South Korea (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 39% share of total imports. Japan (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
