Paddy Rice Market Size in Eastern Asia
After three years of growth, the East Asian paddy rice market decreased by -0.1% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.
Paddy Rice Production in Eastern Asia
In value terms, paddy rice production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 452%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of paddy rice production, comprising approx. 92% of total volume. Moreover, paddy rice production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Japan (X tons), more than tenfold.
In China, paddy rice production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (-0.5% per year) and South Korea (-0.9% per year).
The average paddy rice yield reduced modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately equating the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the paddy rice yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of paddy rice production in Eastern Asia amounted to X ha, leveling off at 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 1.1%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Paddy Rice Exports
Exports in Eastern Asia
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of paddy rice decreased by -13% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 58%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paddy rice exports contracted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +56.2% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
China dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), committing a 7.9% share of total exports.
China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of paddy rice. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+41.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Taiwan (Chinese) emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +41.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of Taiwan (Chinese) (+7.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of China (-7.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest paddy rice supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +2.1%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 20%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.8%).
Paddy Rice Imports
Imports in Eastern Asia
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of paddy rice, when their volume increased by 8.6% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 126%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paddy rice imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 83%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of paddy rice imports in 2022 were China (X tons), together reaching 99% of total import.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the paddy rice imports, with a CAGR of -7.0% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest importers remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paddy rice in Eastern Asia.

Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paddy rice import price decreased by -1.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 71%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for China.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for China amounted to +3.1% per year.
