The East Asian semiconductor device market dropped to $X in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Asia
Semiconductor device exports surged to X units in 2021, rising by 27% compared with the year before. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -12.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 35%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, semiconductor device exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
China dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X units), mixing up a 4.7% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR (X units) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to semiconductor device exports from China stood at +2.8%. At the same time, South Korea (+28.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +28.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-4.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+11 p.p.) and South Korea (+4.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -2.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, China ($X), South Korea ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 81% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, South Korea, with a CAGR of +14.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -17.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per unit), while China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (-1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Asia
In 2021, overseas purchases of semiconductor devices increased by 54% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, semiconductor device imports amounted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Hong Kong SAR was the major importing country with an import of about X units, which recorded 48% of total imports. South Korea (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by China (X units) and Japan (X units). All these countries together held near 51% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Korea (with a CAGR of +8.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, China ($X), South Korea ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 95% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, South Korea, with a CAGR of +8.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -32.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
