Skim Milk Market Size in Eastern Asia

After two years of growth, the East Asian skim milk market decreased by -5.2% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, skim milk production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a abrupt slump. Exports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of skim milk decreased by -28.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 140%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, skim milk exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 162% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Korea represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 70% of total exports. Japan (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by China (9.9%) and Hong Kong SAR (6.3%).

Exports from South Korea increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Japan (+84.5%), China (+77.7%) and Hong Kong SAR (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +84.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Japan and China increased by +13 and +9.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Korea ($X) remains the largest skim milk supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Korea amounted to +8.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (+54.3% per year) and China (+80.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 1.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 9.2%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of skim milk decreased by -14.5% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, skim milk imports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

China (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total imports in 2021.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the skim milk imports, with a CAGR of +33.8% from 2012 to 2021. China (+15 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
