The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 139% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, skis exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable descent. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
China dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), comprising a 6.8% share of total exports. Japan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to skis exports from China stood at +1.3%. At the same time, Japan (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +3.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China increased by +6 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest skis supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled -5.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hong Kong SAR (-3.5% per year) and Japan (+6.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -14.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Skis Imports
Imports in Eastern Asia
In 2021, overseas purchases of skis for winter sports were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 16%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, skis imports reached $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Japan (X tons) represented the key importer of skis for winter sports, generating 58% of total imports. China (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 23% share, followed by South Korea (9%) and Hong Kong SAR (8.6%).
Imports into Japan decreased at an average annual rate of -11.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, China (+23.8%) and Hong Kong SAR (+12.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +23.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Korea (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+21 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (+7.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Japan saw its share reduced by -29.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest skis importing markets in Eastern Asia were Japan ($X), China ($X) and South Korea ($X), together comprising 88% of total imports.
China, with a CAGR of +26.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
