Sugar Beet Market Size in Eastern Asia

The East Asian sugar beet market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of sugar beet production, comprising approx. 71% of total volume. Moreover, sugar beet production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Japan (X tons), twofold.

Sugar beet exports contracted rapidly to X tons in 2022, falling by -69.2% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports saw a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 265%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, sugar beet exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 396%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of sugar beet, namely China, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sugar beet exports, with a CAGR of -1.3% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) also remains the largest sugar beet supplier in Eastern Asia.

For the fourth consecutive year, Eastern Asia recorded decline in overseas purchases of sugar beet, which decreased by -17.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 140%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sugar beet imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Japan (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) represented the largest importers of sugar beet in 2022, resulting at near 43% and 38% of total imports, respectively. Hong Kong SAR (X kg) held the next position in the ranking, followed by South Korea (X kg). All these countries together took near 19% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +6.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), Japan ($X) and South Korea ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 80% share of total imports.

Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +10.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 23% against the previous year. Import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sugar beet import price increased by +113.0% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 45%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+13.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
