In 2022, overseas purchases of sunflower-seed and safflower oil decreased by -49.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 180%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 87% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), achieving a 6.1% share of total imports. The following importers - Japan (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.4% share of total imports.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sunflower-seed and safflower oil imports, with a CAGR of +19.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Korea (+7.0%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Japan (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+27 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Taiwan (Chinese) (-4.9 p.p.), South Korea (-6.1 p.p.) and Japan (-15.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sunflower-seed and safflower oil in Eastern Asia, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +20.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+10.4% per year) and Japan (-3.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 38% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
