Toilet Paper Market Size in Eastern Asia

The East Asian toilet paper market expanded rapidly to $X in 2021, surging by 9.7% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -6.4% against 2019 indices. Exports in Eastern Asia

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of toilet paper decreased by -29.2% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, toilet paper exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

China prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2021. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of toilet paper. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Taiwan (Chinese) emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +2.5% from 2012-2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest toilet paper supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 2.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +6.3%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -18.7% against the previous year. Export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, toilet paper export price decreased by -35.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 48%. In 2021, approx. X tons of toilet paper were imported in Eastern Asia; dropping by -2.5% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

It was distantly followed by Japan (X tons), committing a 23% share of total imports. The following importers - Macao SAR (X tons) and China (X tons) - together made up 6.5% of total imports.

Imports into Hong Kong SAR increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, China (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +3.4% from 2012-2021. Macao SAR experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Japan (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Hong Kong SAR (+8.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Japan saw its share reduced by -8.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported toilet paper in Eastern Asia, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 4.4% share.

In Hong Kong SAR, toilet paper imports increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (-6.1% per year) and China (+3.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.
