Tomato Market Size in Eastern Asia
The East Asian tomato market expanded modestly to $X in 2022, picking up by 2% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. Tomato Production in Eastern Asia
In value terms, tomato production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
China (X tons) remains the largest tomato producing country in Eastern Asia, comprising approx. 98% of total volume.
In China, tomato production expanded at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012-2022.
In 2022, the average tomato yield in Eastern Asia reduced slightly to X tons per ha, almost unchanged from the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the tomato yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then contracted in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of tomatoes in Eastern Asia declined to X ha, which is down by -1.5% against the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 3.2% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Asia
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of tomatoes, when their volume decreased by -18.6% to X tons. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +25.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 54%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
In value terms, tomato exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 57%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
China prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2022. South Korea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Korea (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +6.4% from 2012-2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest tomato supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +15.5%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -7.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while China amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+11.6%).
Tomato Imports
Imports in Eastern Asia
After three years of decline, purchases abroad of tomatoes increased by 76% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 96%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, tomato imports reached $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +91.6% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Hong Kong SAR was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 78% of total imports. Japan (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Macao SAR (8.4%).
Hong Kong SAR was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tomatoes imports, with a CAGR of +16.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Macao SAR (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Hong Kong SAR (+29 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Macao SAR and Japan saw its share reduced by -4% and -24.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), Japan ($X) and Macao SAR ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 97% share of total imports.
Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +14.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -36.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 27%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Macao SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Macao SAR (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
