Toy Market Size in Eastern Asia
In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the East Asian toy market, when its value decreased by -19.7% to $X. The total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
Toy Production in Eastern Asia
In value terms, toy production contracted slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Asia
In 2021, exports of dolls and toys in Eastern Asia surged to X tons, picking up by 22% against the year before. In general, exports recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 86%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, toy exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a resilient increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
China prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2021. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dolls and toys exports, with a CAGR of +7.3% from 2012 to 2021. Hong Kong SAR (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -11.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest toy supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports.
In China, toy exports increased at an average annual rate of +16.7% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 13% against the previous year. Export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, toy export price increased by +61.9% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while China amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+8.8%).
Toy Imports
Imports in Eastern Asia
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of dolls and toys, when their volume increased by 16% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, toy imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the key importers of dolls and toys in 2021, reaching near 37% and 32% of total imports, respectively. South Korea (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by China (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 30% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +14.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest toy importing markets in Eastern Asia were Japan ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and South Korea ($X), with a combined 83% share of total imports. These countries were followed by China and Taiwan (Chinese), which together accounted for a further 16%.
China, with a CAGR of +20.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 9.2%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
