The East Asian unmanufactured tobacco market dropped to $X in 2022, declining by -7.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a deep reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of unmanufactured tobacco production was China (X tons), comprising approx. 94% of total volume. Moreover, unmanufactured tobacco production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Democratic People's Republic of Korea (X tons), more than tenfold.

In China, unmanufactured tobacco production contracted by an average annual rate of -4.6% over the period from 2012-2022.

The average unmanufactured tobacco yield contracted slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, reducing by -3.5% on 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 13%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the unmanufactured tobacco yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of tobacco (unmanufactured) in Eastern Asia amounted to X ha, growing by 3.8% against the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a noticeable descent. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to unmanufactured tobacco production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Unmanufactured tobacco exports surged to X tons in 2022, rising by 17% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild contraction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

China dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2022. Japan (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of tobacco (unmanufactured). At the same time, Japan (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. In 2022, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China totaled $X per ton.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

China was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 63% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), together generating a 33% share of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of tobacco (unmanufactured). Taiwan (Chinese) experienced a relatively flat trend pattern.
