For the fifth year in a row, Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of vehicles not mechanically propelled, which increased by 14% to X units in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +125.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 66%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, non-propelled vehicle exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +88.4% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
China dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2021. Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the vehicles not mechanically propelled exports, with a CAGR of +5.4% from 2012 to 2021. Taiwan (Chinese) (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China increased by +2.1 percentage points.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest non-propelled vehicle supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 2.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +7.5%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, growing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 35%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per unit), while China amounted to $X per unit.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+7.1%).

Imports in Eastern Asia
For the third year in a row, Eastern Asia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of vehicles not mechanically propelled, which increased by 12% to X units in 2021. In general, imports saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, non-propelled vehicle imports amounted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
South Korea represented the key importing country with an import of about X units, which amounted to 69% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Hong Kong SAR (X units) and Japan (X units). All these countries together held approx. 29% share of total imports.
South Korea was also the fastest-growing in terms of the vehicles not mechanically propelled imports, with a CAGR of +21.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+12.1%) and Hong Kong SAR (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. South Korea (+34 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Japan and Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -13.7% and -16.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest non-propelled vehicle importing markets in Eastern Asia were Japan ($X), South Korea ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a combined 90% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, South Korea, with a CAGR of +17.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, surging by 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 20%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
