Wallpaper Market Size in Eastern Asia
In 2021, the East Asian wallpaper market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption showed a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wallpaper production rose significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 16%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of wallpaper and wall coverings were exported in Eastern Asia; increasing by 17% compared with 2020 figures. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +61.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, wallpaper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
China prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), making up a 9% share of total exports. Japan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wallpaper and wall coverings exports, with a CAGR of +12.1% from 2012 to 2021. Japan (-3.6%) and South Korea (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China increased by +32 percentage points.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest wallpaper supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled +10.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (-7.6% per year) and Japan (-3.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of wallpaper and wall coverings, when their volume increased by 29% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wallpaper imports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) was the key importer of wallpaper and wall coverings, constituting 45% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Japan (X tons) and South Korea (X tons). All these countries together held near 52% share of total imports.
Imports into China decreased at an average annual rate of -16.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Japan (+8.0%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +8.0% from 2012-2021. South Korea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Taiwan (Chinese), Japan, Hong Kong SAR and South Korea increased by +17, +8.7, +4.4 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest wallpaper importing markets in Eastern Asia were China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Japan ($X), together accounting for 76% of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea and Taiwan (Chinese), which together accounted for a further 20%.
Among the main importing countries, South Korea, with a CAGR of +5.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -12.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
