In 2021, exports of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste in Eastern Asia skyrocketed to X square meters, jumping by 34% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The volume of export peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

China dominates exports structure, recording X square meters, which was approx. 86% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - South Korea (X square meters) and Hong Kong SAR (X square meters) - together made up 6% of total exports.
Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -10.6% from 2012 to 2021. Japan (-4.9%), South Korea (-14.6%) and Hong Kong SAR (-23.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+4.4 p.p.) and Japan (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Korea (-1.6 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (-6.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest silk fabric supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 7.6% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 4.5% share.
In China, silk fabric exports plunged by an average annual rate of -10.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (-11.5% per year) and South Korea (-15.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per square meter in 2021, picking up by 2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 42%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Hong Kong SAR ($X per square meter) and South Korea ($X per square meter), while China ($X per square meter) and Japan ($X per square meter) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

After eight years of decline, purchases abroad of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste increased by 25% to X square meters in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Japan, with a CAGR of -8.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per square meter, leveling off at the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 15%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per square meter), while China ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
