Watch Market Size in Eastern Asia

The East Asian watch market soared to $X in 2021, surging by 20% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Hong Kong SAR (X units) represented the largest importer of watches, creating 75% of total imports. Japan (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by China (8.1%). The following importers - South Korea (X units) and Macao SAR (X units) - together made up 5.5% of total imports.

Imports into Hong Kong SAR decreased at an average annual rate of -10.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Macao SAR (+24.9%) and China (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Macao SAR emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +24.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Korea (-5.8%) and Japan (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China and Macao SAR increased by +5.9 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), China ($X) and Japan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 83% of total imports. Macao SAR and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

Macao SAR, with a CAGR of +9.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, surging by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 44%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Macao SAR ($X per unit), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
