The East European acetone market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of acetone increased by 19% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +51.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, acetone exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Russia was the main exporter of acetone in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 69% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), generating a 25% share of total exports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of acetone. At the same time, Poland (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +3.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of Poland (+5.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-7.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest acetone supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Russia ($X) and Poland ($X).

Among the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +5.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild curtailment. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+1.9%).

In 2021, purchases abroad of acetone was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, acetone imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 89% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Belarus (X tons), Poland (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) represented the key importer of acetone in Eastern Europe, generating 68% of total import. It was distantly followed by Romania (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Latvia (X tons), together constituting a 24% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +9.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Hungary ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 53% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +12.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 50% against the previous year. Import price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, acetone import price increased by +100.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
