Activated Carbon Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the East European activated carbon market, when its value decreased by -3.2% to $X. The total consumption indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +61.5% against 2016 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Activated Carbon Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, activated carbon production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 33%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, overseas shipments of activated carbon increased by 16% to X tons, rising for the seventh year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, activated carbon exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Poland was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 48% of total exports. Russia (X tons) took a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Estonia (8.5%) and the Czech Republic (6.9%). Slovakia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Estonia (with a CAGR of +146.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest activated carbon supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Estonia, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Poland amounted to +16.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+1.5% per year) and Estonia (+155.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 20%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of activated carbon, when their volume decreased by -5.3% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, activated carbon imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +94.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 33%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented roughly 68% of total imports in 2022. The Czech Republic (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Estonia (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons). All these countries together held near 19% share of total imports. The following importers - Lithuania (X tons) and Romania (X tons) - each reached a 6.2% share of total imports.

Estonia, with a CAGR of +38.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 3.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
