Alums Market Size in Eastern Europe
In 2022, the East European alums market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Alums Production in Eastern Europe
In value terms, alums production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe
Alums exports reduced modestly to X tons in 2022, waning by -2.2% on the year before. Overall, exports saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 35%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, alums exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from the Czech Republic decreased at an average annual rate of -5.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +1.8% from 2012-2022. Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Poland (+1.8 p.p.) and Russia (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Czech Republic (-3.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest alums supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 4.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Czech Republic amounted to -5.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+2.2% per year) and Russia (-3.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Alums Imports
Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, purchases abroad of alums increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, alums imports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 14%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The Czech Republic dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 78% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), generating a 9.2% share of total imports. Poland (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to alums imports into the Czech Republic stood at -11.3%. At the same time, Russia (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +9.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lithuania (-6.0%), Ukraine (-8.4%) and Poland (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia increased by +7.9 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported alums in Eastern Europe, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 9.1% share.
In the Czech Republic, alums imports decreased by an average annual rate of -11.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+5.8% per year) and Poland (-2.3% per year).

Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 14%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
