Ammonia Market Size in Eastern Europe
The East European ammonia market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the market value increased by 7.6% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the production volume increased by 9.9% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, ammonia exports in Eastern Europe contracted to X tons, with a decrease of -2.6% on the previous year. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ammonia exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Russia prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Bulgaria (X tons) and Poland (X tons) - each recorded a 4.4% share of total exports.
Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bulgaria (+33.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +33.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Poland (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia and Bulgaria increased by +24 and +2.2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest ammonia supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bulgaria ($X), with a 4.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to -1.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bulgaria (+35.1% per year) and Poland (-2.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -18.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 60%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Ammonia Imports
Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, the amount of anhydrous ammonia imported in Eastern Europe dropped modestly to X tons, waning by -3.6% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ammonia imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of anhydrous ammonia, namely the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Lithuania, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together mixing up a 23% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +115.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest ammonia importing markets in Eastern Europe were Bulgaria ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Lithuania ($X), together comprising 80% of total imports.
Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +123.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 45% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a mild expansion. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
