Animal Fats Market Size in Eastern Europe

After two years of growth, the East European animal fats market decreased by -35.9% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of animal fats and oils, when their volume increased by 36% to X tons. In general, exports saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 228% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, animal fats exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 276% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Hungary (X tons) represented the key exporter of animal fats and oils, achieving 63% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Romania (X tons), committing a 36% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +88.4%).

In value terms, Hungary ($X) and Romania ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 40% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, animal fats export price increased by +61.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Romania stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (-2.5%).

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, overseas purchases of animal fats and oils were finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, animal fats imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted a resilient expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Hungary represented the largest importer of animal fats and oils in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 62% of total imports in 2021. Latvia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Romania (X tons). All these countries together held near 32% share of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Hungary increased at an average annual rate of +14.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+63.9%), Romania (+31.1%) and Latvia (+23.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +63.9% from 2012-2021. While the share of Romania (+7.8 p.p.), Latvia (+6.5 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Hungary (-16 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Hungary ($X), Romania ($X) and Latvia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 83% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, which accounted for a further 3%.

The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +40.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 20% against the previous year. Import price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, animal fats import price increased by +50.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
