Antibiotic Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the East European antibiotic market decreased by -17.3% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw modest growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Antibiotic Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, antibiotic production declined sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Europe

For the fourth consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded growth in shipments abroad of antibiotics, which increased by 50% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, antibiotic exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Bulgaria prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - the Czech Republic (X tons), Romania (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Russia (X tons) - each finished at a 12% share of total exports.

Bulgaria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the antibiotics exports, with a CAGR of +13.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+10.6%) and Belarus (+9.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Hungary experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Romania (-2.3%), Slovakia (-3.5%) and the Czech Republic (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Bulgaria (+22 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic saw its share reduced by -2.9%, -3.9%, -4.2% and -7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hungary ($X) remains the largest antibiotic supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bulgaria ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Hungary amounted to +2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bulgaria (+3.5% per year) and the Czech Republic (-10.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -38.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of antibiotics, when their volume decreased by -37.7% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports saw a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, antibiotic imports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +27.1% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 24%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 41% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Bulgaria (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Poland (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Romania (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons), together creating a 55% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Estonia (with a CAGR of +10.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported antibiotics in Eastern Europe, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bulgaria ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 9.1% share.

In Russia, antibiotic imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bulgaria (+10.8% per year) and Ukraine (+1.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 33% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.5%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
