Apricot Market Size in Eastern Europe
The East European apricot market contracted modestly to $X in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Apricot Production in Eastern Europe
In value terms, apricot production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +13.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Russia (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Romania (X tons), with a combined 81% share of total production. Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +4.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average apricot yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 58% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the apricot yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of apricots production in Eastern Europe dropped modestly to X ha, with a decrease of -3.8% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 8.2% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, exports of apricots in Eastern Europe skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 32% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, apricot exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Moldova (X tons) represented the largest exporter of apricots, making up 56% of total exports. Bulgaria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Hungary (14%) and Poland (4.6%). Latvia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Moldova was also the fastest-growing in terms of the apricots exports, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bulgaria (+11.2%) and Latvia (+7.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Hungary (-3.2%), Poland (-16.0%) and Lithuania (-22.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Moldova (+44 p.p.), Bulgaria (+9.5 p.p.) and Latvia (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Hungary (-5.5 p.p.), Poland (-22.1 p.p.) and Lithuania (-22.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Moldova ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Hungary ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 71% share of total exports.
Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +11.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 48% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Apricot Imports
Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of apricots, when their volume increased by 18% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 65%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, apricot imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 67%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 54% of total imports in 2022. Romania (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons). All these countries together held near 38% share of total imports. Slovakia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to apricot imports into Russia stood at -1.6%. At the same time, Romania (+12.9%), Slovakia (+8.7%), Bulgaria (+5.1%) and the Czech Republic (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +12.9% from 2012-2022. Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ukraine (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Romania (+6.7 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+2.4 p.p.) and Bulgaria (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ukraine and Russia saw its share reduced by -3.1% and -7.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported apricots in Eastern Europe, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia stood at -2.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+2.9% per year) and the Czech Republic (+5.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -14.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 25%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
