The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, articles of peat exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Latvia was the main exporter of articles of peat in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 78% of total exports in 2022. The Czech Republic (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Poland (8.4%). Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Latvia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the articles of peat exports, with a CAGR of +78.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+28.6%) and Poland (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Latvia (+78 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Poland (-4.9 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-24.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest articles of peat supplying countries in Eastern Europe were the Czech Republic ($X), Latvia ($X) and Poland ($X), together accounting for 87% of total exports.

Latvia, with a CAGR of +33.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -7.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 30%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, imports of articles of peat in Eastern Europe soared to X tons, rising by 18% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, articles of peat imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

The Czech Republic represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 37% of total imports. Lithuania (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Romania (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons). All these countries together held near 54% share of total imports. Bulgaria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +80.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Lithuania ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 66% share of total imports. Poland, Latvia, Romania and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +37.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
