Asparagus Market Size in Eastern Europe

After three years of decline, the East European asparagus market increased by 160% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Asparagus Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, asparagus production rose remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 67% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Poland (X tons) remains the largest asparagus producing country in Eastern Europe, accounting for 60% of total volume. Moreover, asparagus production in Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Hungary (X tons), threefold. Bulgaria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Poland amounted to +19.7%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Hungary (+2.2% per year) and Bulgaria (-12.3% per year).

The average asparagus yield soared to X tons per ha in 2022, growing by 32% on the year before. Over the period under review, the yield showed perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the yield increased by 95% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the asparagus yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The asparagus harvested area shrank sharply to X ha in 2022, which is down by -25% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area saw a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 100%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, exports of asparagus in Eastern Europe fell notably to X tons, with a decrease of -33.6% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 7.5% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asparagus exports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Hungary (X tons) represented the key exporter of asparagus, comprising 66% of total exports. Slovakia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Poland (10%). The following exporters - the Czech Republic (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) - each finished at a 3.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to asparagus exports from Hungary stood at -4.0%. At the same time, Latvia (+19.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +19.4% from 2012-2022. The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Slovakia (-6.9%) and Poland (-19.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Hungary (+27 p.p.) and Slovakia (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Poland saw its share reduced by -25.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hungary ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 94% share of total exports. Latvia and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4.7%.

Latvia, with a CAGR of +19.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

Asparagus imports shrank to X tons in 2022, which is down by -11.1% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, asparagus imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) represented the key importers of asparagus in 2022, resulting at near 29% and 23% of total imports, respectively. Russia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by the Czech Republic (10%) and Romania (9.7%). Latvia (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +29.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported asparagus in Eastern Europe, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with a 12% share.

In Poland, asparagus imports expanded at an average annual rate of +27.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+3.4% per year) and Russia (+9.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 20%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
