The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +60.1% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 13%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, asphalt or bitumen article exports rose to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 22%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Russia dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 62% of total exports in 2022. Poland (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belarus (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 36% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to asphalt or bitumen article exports from Russia stood at +6.5%. At the same time, Belarus (+11.8%), Slovakia (+4.4%) and Lithuania (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +11.8% from 2012-2022. Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia and Belarus increased by +8.8 and +4.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest asphalt or bitumen article supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to +3.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+0.8% per year) and Belarus (+13.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 5.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, overseas purchases of asphalt or bitumen articles decreased by -18% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 7.8% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, asphalt or bitumen article imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of asphalt or bitumen articles, namely the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, represented more than half of total import. Bulgaria (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Romania (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Russia (X tons). All these countries together took near 29% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest asphalt or bitumen article importing markets in Eastern Europe were the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Slovakia ($X), with a combined 44% share of total imports. Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +8.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) and Bulgaria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
