Banana And Plantain Market Size in Eastern Europe
In 2022, the East European banana and plantain market decreased by -1.6% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 9.3%. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, banana and plantain production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 90%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Poland (X tons) remains the largest banana and plantain producing country in Eastern Europe, comprising approx. 100% of total volume.
In Poland, banana and plantain production expanded at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the period from 2012-2022.

Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, the amount of bananas and plantains exported in Eastern Europe reduced to X tons, declining by -8.8% against the year before. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -15.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 23%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, banana and plantain exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +1.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Russia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons), together recording 66% of total export. Latvia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 9% share, followed by Hungary (8.9%), Slovakia (6.8%) and Romania (6.1%).
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Latvia (with a CAGR of +12.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 64% share of total exports. Latvia, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
Latvia, with a CAGR of +11.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 5% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Latvia ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of bananas and plantains, when their volume decreased by -8% to X tons. Overall, imports saw a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, banana and plantain imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia was the largest importer of bananas and plantains in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 51% of total imports in 2022. Poland (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Romania (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 35% share of total imports. The following importers - Hungary (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - each finished at a 5.4% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to banana and plantain imports into Russia stood at -4.4%. At the same time, Romania (+11.3%), Poland (+8.0%), Hungary (+6.0%), Belarus (+2.9%) and the Czech Republic (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +11.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ukraine (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+9 p.p.), Romania (+5.3 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-21.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bananas and plantains in Eastern Europe, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to -6.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+7.5% per year) and Romania (+12.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 7.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
