Banana Market Size in Eastern Europe

Banana Production in Eastern Europe
In value terms, banana production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +7.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 27%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of banana production, accounting for 80% of total volume. Moreover, banana production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Poland (X tons), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Russia stood at +3.2%.
Banana Exports
Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, banana exports in Eastern Europe reduced to X tons, which is down by -6.1% against the year before. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -12.6% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, banana exports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +3.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) was the largest exporter of bananas in Eastern Europe, creating 67% of total export. Latvia (X tons) held a 9.1% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Slovakia (7.2%), Hungary (7.2%) and Romania (6.2%).
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +16.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 66% of total exports. Latvia, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +15.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 7.1% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Latvia ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, imports of bananas in Eastern Europe contracted to X tons, waning by -7.6% against 2021. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -9.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 18%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, banana imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Russia represented the largest importer of bananas in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 52% of total imports in 2022. Poland (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ukraine (6.8%), the Czech Republic (6%) and Romania (6%). Belarus (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+12.1%), Poland (+9.1%), Slovakia (+4.5%), the Czech Republic (+3.4%) and Belarus (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +12.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ukraine (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ukraine (+6.8 p.p.), Poland (+5.9 p.p.) and Romania (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -15.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bananas in Eastern Europe, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +1.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+8.8% per year) and Ukraine (-3.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 6.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
