Beer Market Size in Eastern Europe
The East European beer market was estimated at $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 5.3% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Beer Production in Eastern Europe
In value terms, beer production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe
Beer exports fell to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -7.5% against the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, beer exports contracted to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented roughly 73% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Lithuania (X tons), creating a 6.3% share of total exports. Belarus (X tons), Estonia (X tons), Romania (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +8.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest beer supplying countries in Eastern Europe were the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Russia ($X), together accounting for 73% of total exports. These countries were followed by Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Romania, Belarus, Hungary, Ukraine and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 26%.
Among the main exporting countries, Lithuania, with a CAGR of +10.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 7.7%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Beer Imports
Imports in Eastern Europe
After six years of growth, supplies from abroad of beer decreased by -1.7% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +66.3% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.
In value terms, beer imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed notable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Russia represented the key importer of beer in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 30% of total imports in 2022. Hungary (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Slovakia (9.8%), Belarus (8.5%), Poland (7.5%), Latvia (6.7%), Romania (5%), Bulgaria (5%) and Lithuania (4.9%).
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Latvia (+8.3%), Hungary (+6.5%), Poland (+6.5%), Bulgaria (+6.2%), Romania (+6.1%) and Slovakia (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +8.3% from 2012-2022. Lithuania and Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Hungary, Latvia and Poland increased by +3.3, +2.6 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported beer in Eastern Europe, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with an 8.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with an 8.3% share.
In Russia, beer imports increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hungary (+8.1% per year) and Poland (+5.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
