The East European black printing ink market contracted to $X in 2022, falling by -5.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, overseas shipments of black printing ink decreased by -4% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +8.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 31%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, black printing ink exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 83%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Poland was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 42% of total exports. Lithuania (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Russia (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together took near 46% share of total exports. Latvia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to black printing ink exports from Poland stood at +5.1%. At the same time, Russia (+16.2%), Belarus (+12.4%), the Czech Republic (+9.5%), Lithuania (+4.8%) and Latvia (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +16.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Hungary (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+6.7 p.p.), Belarus (+5 p.p.), Poland (+4.3 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hungary saw its share reduced by -15.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest black printing ink supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Lithuania ($X), together comprising 64% of total exports. Hungary, Belarus, Russia and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Russia, with a CAGR of +16.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, approx. X tons of black printing ink were imported in Eastern Europe; declining by -6.2% on 2021. In general, imports recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 11%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, black printing ink imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the key importers of black printing ink in 2022, amounting to near 29% and 28% of total imports, respectively. The Czech Republic (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Hungary (7.7%) and Romania (5.5%). The following importers - Slovakia (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) - together made up 6.7% of total imports.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 65% of total imports. Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

Latvia, with a CAGR of +7.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
