Buckwheat Market Size in Eastern Europe
The East European buckwheat market totaled $X in 2022, picking up by 9.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a slight contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Buckwheat Production in Eastern Europe
In value terms, buckwheat production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 85% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of buckwheat production, accounting for 72% of total volume. Moreover, buckwheat production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Poland (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ukraine (X tons), with an 8.1% share.
In Russia, buckwheat production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+2.7% per year) and Ukraine (-8.2% per year).
In 2022, the average yield of buckwheat in Eastern Europe totaled X tons per ha, increasing by 3.4% against 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of buckwheat in Eastern Europe fell modestly to X ha, with a decrease of -4.3% on 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 24%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe
Buckwheat exports reduced to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -12.4% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 108% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, buckwheat exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 64%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) represented the major exporter of buckwheat, generating 60% of total exports. Poland (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Latvia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Estonia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 36% share of total exports. The following exporters - Belarus (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.1% share of total exports.
Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +22.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belarus (+46.6%), Estonia (+36.4%), Lithuania (+17.8%), Latvia (+16.1%), the Czech Republic (+7.9%) and Poland (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +46.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia and Estonia increased by +22 and +4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest buckwheat supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 13% share.
In Russia, buckwheat exports increased at an average annual rate of +22.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+12.4% per year) and Lithuania (+24.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 2.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, buckwheat export price increased by +112.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 62% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Buckwheat Imports
Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of buckwheat, when their volume decreased by -16.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 157%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
In value terms, buckwheat imports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 89% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of buckwheat imports in 2022 were Lithuania (X tons), Poland (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons), together finishing at 88% of total import. It was distantly followed by Estonia (X tons), mixing up a 5.6% share of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lithuania (with a CAGR of +35.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest buckwheat importing markets in Eastern Europe were Lithuania ($X), Poland ($X) and Latvia ($X), with a combined 69% share of total imports.
Lithuania, with a CAGR of +44.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 29% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 39% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
