The East European butanone market contracted to $X in 2022, shrinking by -5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of butanone (methyl ethyl ketone), when their volume decreased by -34.9% to X tons. In 2022, the Czech Republic (X tons) was the largest exporter of butanone (methyl ethyl ketone), constituting 57% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Bulgaria (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together constituting a 35% share of total exports. Russia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to butanone exports from the Czech Republic stood at +28.5%. At the same time, Bulgaria (+52.8%), Lithuania (+52.6%), Russia (+37.8%), Hungary (+19.0%) and Poland (+17.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of the Czech Republic (+35 p.p.), Bulgaria (+16 p.p.), Lithuania (+11 p.p.) and Russia (+3.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest butanone supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bulgaria ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Czech Republic totaled +33.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bulgaria (+33.9% per year) and Russia (+67.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 38% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 117%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+21.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, butanone imports in Eastern Europe fell notably to X tons, which is down by -16.6% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, butanone imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -6.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 32% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
