Cabbage Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European cabbage market fell modestly to $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Cabbage Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, cabbage production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 17%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Russia (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Poland (X tons), with a combined 81% share of total production. Romania and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of -0.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.

The average cabbage yield reached X tons per ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 6.3%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of cabbage and other brassicas were harvested in Eastern Europe; leveling off at the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cabbage production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, overseas shipments of cabbage and other brassicas increased by 15% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 23%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cabbage exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 36%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 62% of total exports in 2022. Russia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Belarus (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together took near 24% share of total exports. Hungary (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cabbage exports from Poland stood at -3.0%. At the same time, Russia (+64.2%), Romania (+29.3%) and Latvia (+9.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +64.2% from 2012-2022. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-3.0%) and Hungary (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+9.6 p.p.), Romania (+2.4 p.p.), Latvia (+2 p.p.) and Belarus (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Hungary (-1.9 p.p.) and Poland (-8.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest cabbage supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 7.6% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 7.2% share.

In Poland, cabbage exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hungary (-3.5% per year) and the Czech Republic (+0.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 1.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cabbage export price decreased by -0.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 44%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of cabbage and other brassicas were imported in Eastern Europe; with an increase of 9.4% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons), distantly followed by Ukraine (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Romania (X tons) represented the largest importers of cabbage and other brassicas, together making up 79% of total imports. The following importers - Lithuania (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) - together made up 21% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ukraine (with a CAGR of +33.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cabbage importing markets in Eastern Europe were Ukraine ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 47% share of total imports.

Ukraine, with a CAGR of +32.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
