Carbonate imports expanded rapidly to X tons in 2021, surging by 11% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carbonate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Poland (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Romania (X tons), Russia (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) was the main importer of carbonates and peroxocarbonates in Eastern Europe, generating 96% of total import. Estonia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Latvia (with a CAGR of +40.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 57% of total imports. Ukraine, Belarus, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

Latvia, with a CAGR of +12.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
