Carob Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European carob market surged to $X in 2022, picking up by 16% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Carob Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, carob production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 96%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Ukraine (X tons) remains the largest carob producing country in Eastern Europe, accounting for 90% of total volume. Moreover, carob production in Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Hungary (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Ukraine stood at +2.9%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Hungary (-12.8% per year) and Bulgaria (+478.2% per year).

The average carob yield rose significantly to X tons per ha in 2022, picking up by 7.2% compared with the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of carob production in Eastern Europe was estimated at X ha, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, overseas shipments of carob increased by 41% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, exports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 471%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carob exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 191% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main exporters of carob in 2022, resulting at near 38% and 29% of total exports, respectively. Slovakia (X tons) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (9.5%) and Bulgaria (7.5%). Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +98.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest carob supplying countries in Eastern Europe were the Czech Republic ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Slovakia ($X), together comprising 69% of total exports. Hungary, Poland and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +91.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -18.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 55%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+10.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, approx. X tons of carob were imported in Eastern Europe; shrinking by -7.4% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 27%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carob imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 30%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia was the main importer of carob in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 59% of total imports in 2022. Ukraine (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together took near 37% share of total imports. Romania (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ukraine (+20.8%), Poland (+18.4%) and Romania (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +20.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-22.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia, Ukraine, Poland and Romania increased by +19, +17, +13 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported carob in Eastern Europe, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 12% share.

In Russia, carob imports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+30.7% per year) and Ukraine (+23.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+11.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
