The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +95.0% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, corrugated paper box exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Poland represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 42% of total exports. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Hungary (9.6%), Russia (9.6%), Romania (7.3%) and Slovakia (5.7%). Latvia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+17.0%), Romania (+16.7%), the Czech Republic (+6.9%), Slovakia (+6.7%) and Hungary (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +17.0% from 2012-2022. Latvia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia, Romania and Poland increased by +5.7, +4.2 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest corrugated paper box supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +12.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (+8.3% per year) and Hungary (+6.3% per year).

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 19% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +13.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

The countries with the highest levels of corrugated paper box imports in 2022 were Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons), together resulting at 67% of total import. Belarus (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Romania (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 19% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +11.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Hungary ($X) and Slovakia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 53% share of total imports. Poland, Belarus, Romania and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +13.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Romania ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) and Belarus ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
