It was distantly followed by Hungary (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons), together creating a 25% share of total exports. The following exporters - Belarus (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - together made up 6.1% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +20.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest paperboard case material supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and Hungary ($X), with a combined 79% share of total exports. Slovakia, Romania, Belarus and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +25.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 38% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +65.0% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, paperboard case material imports rose notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 63%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Poland represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 51% of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Romania (7.2%) and Hungary (6.5%). Bulgaria (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Poland increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+9.8%), Lithuania (+9.3%), Bulgaria (+8.1%), Hungary (+6.3%), the Czech Republic (+5.0%) and Slovakia (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +9.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Russia (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Poland and Romania increased by +4 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paperboard case materials in Eastern Europe, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with a 7.3% share.
