Cashew Nut Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the East European cashew nut market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Cashew Nut Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, cashew nut production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Russia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Romania (X tons), with a combined 81% share of total production. These countries were followed by Moldova, Slovakia and Latvia, which together accounted for a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +0.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cashew Nut Exports

Exports in Eastern Europe

For the third consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded growth in overseas shipments of cashew nuts, which increased by 69% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 510% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, cashew nut exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 280% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

Lithuania represented the major exporter of cashew nuts in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 63% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Romania (X tons), creating a 31% share of total exports. The following exporters - Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) - each recorded a 4.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cashew nut exports from Lithuania stood at +75.2%. At the same time, Romania (+98.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +98.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Poland (-2.0%) and Russia (-32.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Lithuania (+62 p.p.) and Romania (+31 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-83.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Lithuania ($X) emerged as the largest cashew nut supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with a 28% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 3.6% share.

In Lithuania, cashew nut exports increased at an average annual rate of +71.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Romania (+76.8% per year) and Poland (+4.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 108%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Cashew Nut Imports

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, after five years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of cashew nuts, when their volume increased by 33% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 160%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of cashew nut imports in 2021 were Belarus (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together recording 85% of total import. It was distantly followed by Lithuania (X tons) and Romania (X tons), together achieving a 13% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Belarus (with a CAGR of +34.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ukraine ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Lithuania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 75% share of total imports. Poland, Romania and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +41.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -8.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 44%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
