Wood Barrel Market Size in Eastern Europe
The East European wood barrel market amounted to $X in 2022, rising by 3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Wood Barrel Production in Eastern Europe
In value terms, wood barrel production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +4.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 30%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of casks, barrels, vats, tubs, and coopers products of wood decreased by -23.1% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 28%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.
In value terms, wood barrel exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the five major exporters of casks, barrels, vats, tubs, and coopers products of wood, namely Lithuania, Romania, Hungary, Ukraine and Bulgaria, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Poland (X units) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 6.5% share, followed by Estonia (6.3%) and Russia (5.3%).
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +72.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Lithuania ($X), Hungary ($X) and Romania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 71% share of total exports. Ukraine, Estonia, Bulgaria, Russia and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +52.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per unit, rising by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a slight increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 20%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per unit), while Poland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+11.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of casks, barrels, vats, tubs, and coopers products of wood, when their volume decreased by -12.6% to X units. In general, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 70%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wood barrel imports contracted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +18.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
Bulgaria (X units) and Russia (X units) represented the largest importers of casks, barrels, vats, tubs, and coopers products of wood in 2022, reaching near 25% and 20% of total imports, respectively. Hungary (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Lithuania (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Poland (X units) and Romania (X units). All these countries together took near 46% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Lithuania (with a CAGR of +46.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wood barrel importing markets in Eastern Europe were Russia ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together comprising 56% of total imports. These countries were followed by Lithuania, Romania, Hungary and Poland, which together accounted for a further 33%.
Lithuania, with a CAGR of +51.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per unit, growing by 7.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while Hungary ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
