In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the East European caustic soda market, when its value increased by 10% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a slight downturn. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. In 2021, shipments abroad of caustic soda decreased by -7.8% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 16%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, caustic soda exports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -27.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, caustic soda imports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 48%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, the largest caustic soda importing markets in Eastern Europe were the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Belarus ($X), with a combined 54% share of total imports. Slovakia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Hungary, Romania and Estonia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

Estonia, with a CAGR of +6.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
