The East European ceramic sanitary ware market shrank to $X in 2022, declining by -7.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, Poland (X units) and Russia (X units) represented the main exporters of ceramic sinks, baths, water closet pans and similar sanitary fixtures in Eastern Europe, together finishing at near 67% of total exports. Ukraine (X units) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (6.3%). Belarus (X units), Bulgaria (X units) and Estonia (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +16.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 75% share of total exports. Ukraine, Estonia, Belarus and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +21.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Export price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ceramic sanitary ware export price increased by +75.2% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($X per unit), while Ukraine ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, purchases abroad of ceramic sinks, baths, water closet pans and similar sanitary fixtures decreased by -8.6% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ceramic sanitary ware imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the main importing country with an import of about X units, which accounted for 70% of total imports. Hungary (X units) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Poland (8.2%). Romania (X units), Slovakia (X units) and the Czech Republic (X units) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -2.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Hungary (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +1.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Romania (-18.8%), Poland (-19.9%), Slovakia (-21.9%) and the Czech Republic (-28.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+46 p.p.) and Hungary (+8.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Slovakia (-3.9 p.p.), Romania (-5 p.p.), the Czech Republic (-11.6 p.p.) and Poland (-12.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ceramic sinks, baths, water closet pans and similar sanitary fixtures in Eastern Europe, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 4% share.

In Russia, ceramic sanitary ware imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (+3.3% per year) and Poland (-20.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -6.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade.
