The East European cereal germ market contracted significantly to $X in 2021, waning by -16.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +101.1% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. In value terms, cereal germ exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +94.1% against 2018 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The biggest shipments were from Hungary (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons), together resulting at 80% of total export. Slovakia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Romania (6.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +35.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cereal germ supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Hungary ($X), Russia ($X) and Bulgaria ($X), together accounting for 82% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +36.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 34% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Bulgaria ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) and Slovakia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the amount of cereal germ imported in Eastern Europe reached X tons, surging by 9.7% on 2020. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 78%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cereal germ imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 81% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Hungary represented the main importer of cereal germ in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 51% of total imports in 2021. Bulgaria (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Poland (16%) and Romania (14%).

Hungary experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of cereal germ. At the same time, Poland (+38.8%) and Romania (+17.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +38.8% from 2012-2021. Bulgaria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Poland (+16 p.p.) and Romania (+11 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
