Other Cereals Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the East European other cereals market decreased by -3.2% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption saw a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Other Cereals Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, other cereals production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Poland (X tons) remains the largest other cereals producing country in Eastern Europe, accounting for 70% of total volume. Moreover, other cereals production in Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Belarus (X tons), fivefold. Lithuania (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 3.8% share.

In Poland, other cereals production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Belarus (-2.6% per year) and Lithuania (-1.9% per year).

In 2021, the average other cereals yield in Eastern Europe shrank to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -10.3% compared with the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 24%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then contracted in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The other cereals harvested area was estimated at X ha in 2021, picking up by 4.7% on the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a mild curtailment. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, other cereals exports in Eastern Europe plummeted to X tons, waning by -30.1% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 153% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, other cereals exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 154% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Poland dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2021. The Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Poland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the other cerealses exports, with a CAGR of +28.0% from 2012 to 2021. The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Poland (+61 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Czech Republic saw its share reduced by -6.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest other cereals supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 4% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 25% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild curtailment. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Poland amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+0.7%).

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of other cerealses decreased by -6.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, other cereals imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Hungary (X tons), distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) represented the main importers of other cerealses, together generating 86% of total imports. Ukraine (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Ukraine (with a CAGR of +76.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Hungary ($X) and Romania ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 49% of total imports. Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Among the main importing countries, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +26.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 21% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
