Exports in Eastern Europe
After five years of growth, overseas shipments of chalks decreased by -4.5% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 64%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
In value terms, chalk exports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +150.1% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) dominates exports structure, together comprising 94% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Romania (X tons), generating a 4.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Poland (with a CAGR of +28.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and Romania ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 95% of total exports.
Poland, with a CAGR of +19.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 42% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Chalk Imports
Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2021, purchases abroad of chalks increased by 32% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, chalk imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible slump. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Poland was the main importer of chalks in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 47% of total imports in 2021. Russia (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (9.6%), Lithuania (9%), the Czech Republic (7.1%) and Hungary (4.5%). Ukraine (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of chalks. At the same time, Russia (+7.5%) and Lithuania (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +7.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hungary (-3.4%), the Czech Republic (-3.7%), Ukraine (-8.1%) and Belarus (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+10 p.p.), Russia (+7.9 p.p.) and Lithuania (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Ukraine (-2.3 p.p.) and Belarus (-8.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chalks in Eastern Europe, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 10% share.
In Poland, chalk imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (-0.3% per year) and the Czech Republic (-8.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -8.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 30%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
