The average cherry and sour cherry yield shrank modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 20%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the cherry and sour cherry yield remained at a lower figure. In value terms, cherry and sour cherry exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt descent. Moldova (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) represented the main exporters of cherries and sour cherries in 2022, accounting for near 36% and 28% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons), together comprising a 24% share of total exports. Bulgaria (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -6.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 61%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of cherries and sour cherries, when their volume decreased by -56.1% to X tons. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -11.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+27.6%), Latvia (+18.9%), Belarus (+17.4%), Poland (+8.5%) and Bulgaria (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +27.6% from 2012-2022. Lithuania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Romania (+11 p.p.), Belarus (+7.7 p.p.), Poland (+7.2 p.p.), Latvia (+4.3 p.p.), Bulgaria (+3.6 p.p.) and Lithuania (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -40.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cherries and sour cherries in Eastern Europe, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 7% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 3.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to +1.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+11.1% per year) and Belarus (+5.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 120% against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted strong growth. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
